Undergraduate English Major

Admission Requirements

• 45 quarter-hour credits (or equivalent) completed with at least a 2.0 overall GPA; and
• 10 credits of literature in 200-level or above English courses with at least a 2.5 GPA.

Admission is competitive; completion of these requirements does not guarantee admission. Students apply to the English Advising Office, A-2-B Padelford Hall (see campus map), during the first two weeks of Autumn, Winter and Spring Quarters.

Major Requirements

A maximum of 20 credits of 200-level courses and a maximum of five credits of creative writing may be applied towards the major. 15 credits of course work in the major must cover subjects and material written prior to 1900.

Please note: The English Language and Literature emphasis is the only major emphasis available to Evening Degree Program students.

Language and Literature:

A minimum of 55 credits:

• 25 credits in English Major Core courses, with at least five credits in each of three categories: 1) Theories and Methodologies of Language and Literature; 2) Forms and Genres or Language and Literature; 3) Histories of Language and Literature. No more than 10 credits of Core courses may be completed at the 200-level.
• 10 credits in ENGL 202: Introduction to the Study of English Language and Literature and its required writing link, ENGL 197: Writing in the Humanities. NOTE: ENGL 202 and 197 are available only through the day program. Evening Degree Program students may petition to take these courses through the day program, or they may complete additional approved upper-division Core courses through Evening Degree. Consult an English Adviser for exceptions.
• 5 credits in ENGL 302: Critical Practice. NOTE: ENGL 302 is available only through the day program. Evening Degree Program students may petition to take this course through the day program, or they may complete additional approved upper-division Core courses through Evening Degree. Consult an English Adviser for exceptions.
• 10 credits in English elective courses.
• 5 credits in a 400-level senior capstone course, chosen from ENGL 407, ENGL 440, ENGL 442, ENGL 443, ENGL 44, ENGL 473, or ENGL 498.
